Technical Information on Parma Controllers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before diving into what's available in controllers and related items, a quick sentence or two is appropriate regarding exactly what controllers are and how they function. The ability to control a slot car depends completely on a small device called a "hand controller." This pistol-shaped item enables you to control the amount of electrical current that the car receives, and therefore, its speed.
It is easy to understand the function of a hand controller if you think of it as nothing more than a simple electrical 'valve.' Take your finger off the trigger and the 'valve' closes completely (no current gets through to the motor). Squeeze the trigger slightly and the 'valve' opens a bit (some current gets through and the car starts to roll). Squeeze the trigger more and the 'valve' opens further (even more current passes through to the motor and the car goes faster) and so on until the 'valve' is fully open and all of the available current is fed to the motor and the car is running 'flat out.'
Inside the hand controller is a resistor, which is simply a ceramic core with wire wrapped around it. When the trigger is depressed, a wiper rubs across the coils on the resistor, picking up more and more current and passing it along to the cars motor. The resistance to the current trying to pass through the coils is measured in ohms. The thickness of wire and number of coils around the resistor determine its ohm rating. Controllers can get quite hot during a race, especially on tracks with battery power, where controllers have to flow a large amount of current. To compensate for this, 'heat sinks' are used to dissipate the heat rapidly, as well as cooling vents molded into the plastic handle.

Parma produces the most popular controller available on the market today. Resistors come in a wide variety of ohms and all of the individual parts are readily available. The Econo controller is an excellent replacement for the standard item included in Scalextric, Ninco Carrera and SCX race sets. The Parma #216, in fact, is a good way to increase the performance of the stock cars without actually modifying the car. The Turbo controller (available in kit form or assembled) is the next step up the ladder with many advanced features - and options - for the advanced racer.
Resistors come in three different styles; Econo, Sebring/Plus, and Daytona/T.Q.( The Daytona not generally available to the UK) The Econo is a basic single barrel design with minimal coating. The Sebring or Plus Resistor is also a single barrel configuration but fully covered with a top-of-the-line coating. The Daytona is a double-barrel design that allows the use of dual heat sinks and also features a quality coating. The T.Q. takes the Daytona a step further and includes Parma's best coating. The Daytona or T.Q. is intended for the Turbo; however, it will fit the Econo controller if the top portion of the frame is removed.
When ordering a complete controller or resistor we need to know the ohmage desired. For those not familiar with the effect of ohms on the controller, just remember that fewer ohms means a quicker response and higher ohms means a slower response. Here are a few guidelines to help you select the proper ohmage for your customers:
60-ohms - Suggested for any type of layout.
45-ohms - Suggested for cars on small twisty layouts nmore sporty feel than the 60 ohm.
25 to 35-ohms - For Stock or magnet cars on large, fast layouts
